Portaro: Models and Technical Data

Post by Ramiro »

In 1976, the Portuguese company SEMAL (Sociedade Electro-Mecânica de Automóveis, Ldª) started the production of Portaro models under the license of the Romanian ARO.

The Portaro, which means Portugal + Aro, was originally produced in the manufacture of agricultural machinery of Tramagal and quickly became one of the best 4x4 ever produced in Portugal, reaching the status of real myth in the domestic car industry until the late 80s.

Here´s the most important models and technical data:

260 D (Diesel)
260 Celta Turbo
230 PV Petrol
210 PT Turbo
320 Diesel (Campina)

One of the first models built by SEMAL was the 240 Diesel, Daihatsu Engine, equipped with front winch, which was used mainly by municipal services of Portugal for monitoring and conservation the forests.

This notice refers the incredible autonomy that allowed Portaro pathways of 1.000 kilometers without need fuel supply.

In the photo below, the Van type Portaro 320 Campina, on the assembly line.

Speaking about Campina...Here's the Portaro Van 320 Campina.

After 1977, the Campina was used intensively in Portugal particulary in farm work, due to its robustness, economy and capacity of transport up 1300 Kg.

Today there are only a few models of this magnificent 4x4 Van.

In 1977, the Vitória Garage announced 3 models for sale:

The Portaro with metal hood, which cost in portuguese currency 373.006$00 (€ 1860.00), the Portaro with canvas hood by a price of 358.209$00 (€ 1786.00), and the Portaro box of wood which could be bought for 378.786$00(€ 1.889,00).

Curious detail is that all the models have the spare wheel up on the boot.

good old days!!!... \:D/

After the success of the 240 D and 320 Campina models, SEMAL started the production of 260 series, whose most popular versions were the 260 D, the 260 DCM and 260 Turbo Diesel with Daihatsu engine and 2530 CC.

The main change was in the front panel and in the accessories who were improved. SEMAL wanted to conquer the young market showing that Portaro could be converted into a sports jeep.

Irrefutable proof

This is an historic document published in 1982. A photo of the export of several Portaro's for England, (which has tradition of producing the best off-road vehicles), Switzerland and also for Jordan.

The Portaro had 3 models and 6 versions. In the picture below we can see the title that made it famous "The important thing is winning"

The Portaro 260 DCM stood out for its versatility and ability to withstand the toughest conditions of the terrain on earth and stone, and to cross deep streams without any difficulty.

Today, a historical review allows us to conclude that the exportation of the Aro models to Portugal, was due to a large connection between the political system that existed in Portugal in 1976, and the Romanian regime.

In Portugal, the Portaro, due to its strength, economy and low cost of production was intensively used in agrarian reform, during the revolutionary period.

Probably, the most charismatic of-road vehicle built by the portuguese SEMAL was the military version of Portaro, for the Army. It was constructed in accordance with NATO standards, and exported mainly to Switzerland.

The portaro GVM was very versatile and had many functions: rocket launcher, machine gun, cannon or ambulance, were some of those.

Currently, no version of this model is known in Portugal.

Salut Dragospetres!

Unfortunately there aren't more public pictures of the Portaro GVM. Probably only in the army files.

This information was announced by the ACP magazine, nº 9 and 10, série III, in 1983.
