The history of ARO 4x4
IMS-57, the first produced vehicle
The first production of Romanian road vehicle IMS-57 out going from Russian Gaz started in Campulung in 1957. With the use of own or imported components. The type 914 IMS-57 had following parameters: two door body with canvas, petrol engine with capacity of 3.260 cm3, 50 horses/2.800 r.p.m., speed 80kmh and consumption 24l/100 km. The production was handmade, the parts were made on wooden hooves, the finishing work of the body and varnish was made in Pitesti Motorcar factory and the function of chassis was tested on road Capulung -Colibasi.
M-59/M-461
Two years later a new type M-59 was introduced that showed a new step forward in comparison with IMS-57: engine had 56 horses and the maximal speed up to 90kmh, manual windscreen wiper had been changed by electrical one. All vehicles had been varnished, completed and finished in Campulung. At the same time with the increasing production of M-59 (803 pcs vehicles in 1959 up to 3222 pcs vehicles in 1963) new design and start of a new production of M-461 had been prepared. The production started in 1964. Remarkable improvement of vehicle complementation and and mechanical parts had been seen. The engine had 4 cylinders in one row, 70 horses and maximal speed 100 kmh and consumption 17l/100 km at 80 kmh. In 1965 the first 2000 pcs of vehicles were exported to China and Columbia. ARO M461 was powerful road vehicle that won several international competitions: 1970 - Forest Rally (Belgium), 1973 - Sonsof Beaches (Oregon). With improving of technology and performance by the year 1975 there were 80.233 pcs of vehicles made , out of 46.549 were exported and the rest was used mainly by Romanian army.
ARO 24,32,33
The new road vehicle of the same class was being prepared from the year 1966: ARO 240 the first from the serie 24. The new type had several distinguished and interesting upgrades when we look at the time of finishing the design. The body was totally new, it was safer inside and more comfortable. The engine had capacity of 2.495 cm3, 83 horses and maximal speed 115-120 kmh, consumption of 13.8l/100 km. In the year 1972 company FORD-EUROPE organised a test where ARO got the second prize behind Range Rover and before Jeep-Wills, Ford or Land Rover.
From the beginning was this model designed in two versions: two door body with canvas (240) and four door body with solid roof (244). From these two versions after small changes there has been a new type pick-up made (242) and other modification 243 (canvas was changed by solid roof). Elongated pick-up 320 started to be designed in 1978 and was assembled by a manufacturer of buses in Bucharest. After 1989 the type serie 24 was changed by assembling imported engines (Ford, Peugeot) and enlarged with new type series 32 and 33. New modifications have been made 323 SANITA, 246 with raised roof, 335 SASSI. 324 Pick-up, 328 MAXI TAXI, luxurious type ARO Hunter equipped by engine COSWORTH.
During the years ARO had been modificated, (dashboard, front mask, steering, brakes). Chassis was in the years 1998-1999 totally revised, mainly from the view of usage of new materials. New components mainly in chassis part have changed their durability and driving characteristics. Conceptually the chassis part together with the body face has been kept the same. Why to change something that had shown the best to be on these vehicles. ARO 24 was imported into several countries, including Canada, England, and Australia and even was produced also in Portugal (called Portato) and in Spain (called Hisparo). That also wan worldknow Pharaons Rally Raid. Over 125.000 vehicles from the family ARO 24 were produced until the year 1985 and out of 93.000 were imported.
ARO 10
After 5 years of designs, testing and preparations for production ARO 10 was introduced into market in 1980 under the name Dacia 10 in Romania, ARO Trapeurs in France, ARO Ischia in Italy and Dacia Duster in Great Britain. ARO 10 was selected into middle class with attractive design. A new body construction was chosen with door doors, metal and water resistant roof. This vehicle has several familiar elements with Dacia 1300 and was produced in four basic types: 10.0, 10.1, 10.3, 10.4.. The engine was taken from Dacia 1.3 l. From the beginning of 1984 the vehicle had engine of 1397cm3 that could make maximal speed of 118kmh. The export started already in 1980 and until 1985 there were 90% of production exported into the following countries: Great Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Greece. Diesel engines VW and Pegaso were used for export. In 1985 was finished 10.8 pick-up in the modification short , very short, double cab. At that time a new prototype ARO SCORPION was introduced in Italy. During the years ARO 10 had been modificated and equipped with front mask with two or four lights, sports wheels and plastic body accessories. Also a new four-door version was being produced. Version ARO 10 SOFT-TOP called Spartana is equipped with engine Renault 1,9 TD. In 1999 a new prototype ARO 10 Super on basis of chassis ARO 244. It has not been introduced into serie production.
The philosophy of the producer has always been clear. To produce cheap, simple, on diagnostically apparatus independent and reliable terrain vehicle. Without electronic and extra outfit, for the most difficult conditions, with financially interesting care and with the best characteristics while driving in terrain. Terrain vehicle ARO will surprise you on flat road. However when you turn off road it will show you what it had been created for.

Inca cateva site-uri, pe aceeasi tema…

Background
The Dacia Duster dates from the bad old days when Romania was part of the Communist Bloc and all motor manufacturers were owned by the state. It was the result of collaboration between ARO (who had built Soviet GAZ 4x4s under licence in Romania since 1964) and Dacia (who had close links with Renault and had been building some of the French company's products under licence since 1966).
The collaboration between the two produced a recreational 4x4 which made its debut in 1979 under the title of the ARO 10-series and used Dacia built Renault engines. Sold in other European countries as AROs, these came to Britain as Dacia Dusters in 1985. The Dacia name was chosen because Britain was already familiar with the Dacia Denem, a licence-built Renault 12 introduced in 1982.
The history of the Duster in Britain has been plagued by problems with the importers. Plans announced to bring the vehicles in during 1982 were held up when the first importers ceased trading; there was a hiccup in autumn 1990 when the new importers gave way to a third company; and then imports ceased in 1993, apparently permanently. The last Duster was sold in Britain in September 1993, but the vehicle remains available in Romania and in other European countries, as the ARO 10-series.
As a result, the Duster does not enjoy a good reputation in Britain. Fundamentally, however, it is a soundly-conceived lightweight 4x4 aimed at the cheap end of the recreational market.
Character summary
The square-rigged Duster somehow contrives to look too flimsy to be a credible 4x4, especially in soft-top Roadster guise. Always intended as a cheap vehicle to buy, its general aura is exactly that. As an inexpensive recreational vehicle, it has some interest as a secondhand buy. However, its general lack of credibility in off-roading circles means that it is not perhaps the most sensible for weekend fun in the mud. Similarly, the Duster's negative image may be sufficient reason for not buying one as an everyday vehicle.
The lack of a current dealer network places the Duster firmly at the cheaper end of the recreational vehicle market. This Roadster Plus model, with white hood and black trim, was introduced in 1989. In practical terms, the Duster is a reasonably spacious short-wheelbase four-seater. The five people it should carry in theory will not find it very comfortable. Luggage-space is also limited when all the seats are in use.
Performance summary
The Duster's road performance is adequate but rather lacklustre, especially in diesel-powered form. Handling and road-holding are also unremarkable, although more power under the bonnet would probably expose some weaknesses. The gearchange is heavy and awkward, and the steering rather wooden. Overall, this is not an inspiring vehicle to drive on the road.
Off the road, the Duster justifies itself rather better. The fairly short wheelbase and short overhangs allow it to perform quite well, although the small 14in wheels mean that ground clearance under the axles can often be less than with other lightweight 4x4s. Torque delivery is only adequate with either engine, but the Duster manages to clamber about well enough to be an enjoyable recreational vehicle.
Reliability, weaknesses, spares
The build quality of the Duster was always variable and often doubtful. Particular weaknesses include the soft-top. However, the mechanical components - many of Renault origin although made in Romania - are generally reliable.
As the Duster is no longer sold in Britain, spares will be problematical. However, many Renault components can be used to keep a vehicle in mechanical health. It is also worth remembering that the Duster is still sold in several continental European countries, and that spares should be available through ARO dealers there.
Resale values
Now that the Duster is no longer imported to the UK or supported by a dealer network, resale values have sunk through the floor. As a result, very few Dusters will be sold through trade outlets; most will change hands privately.
