Portaro The story begins in 1974 when the Company decides Automobile Electromechanical build a factory that was intended to produce a jeep, Hipólito Pires is invited to lead the project. "When I arrived there was no wiring! We started everything from scratch ... but without knowing what there was to be done.
We then learned that the ARO Romania's Renault bought the rights to produce a jeep and we took some of those cars trying to put a diesel engine.
The first experiments showed that it was necessary to look for an engine evolved and completely rebuild the car. "In March I went to Japan seeking a modern engine and Romania to renegotiate the contract so we can make the car as we wanted."
When Hippolytus Pires comes to Portugal two days after 11 March 1975, is awaiting the works council that advises the Head of the company had gone to Brazil and from then on everything was in their hands. "I told them I was not interested and I was accused of economic saboteur. On the other hand, the Bank Atlantic Portuguese come to me asking me not to abandon the project and assuring me support."
Hipólito Pires is now the new leader of the Society of Automotive Electromechanical and a team quickly realizes that there is one essential rule to follow: "We had to be rigorous but pragmatic, we had to make a car at a competitive price. Let us get down to the engines Daihatsu and started to develop a range of components in Portugal that would result in a vehicle more evolved than the Romanian ARO. Proof of this is that the PORTARI steering has already made in Portugal, the five-speed gearbox was Daihatsu and one thing that few people know is that the first turbo engine from Daihatsu was developed by us. "
From 1975 to 1983 to PORTARI prospered, growing to 200 workers and make more than 2000 cars per year, always winning money. The problems came in 1983. "The market was very small and UMM had subsided all the support we never received a penny of the state. We knew that to knock the internationally had to make the car move. It was unfortunate that we had not continued for the second car was even more evolved, causing , even wonder at Daihatsu with whom he had an excellent relationship. We did the same line, which made the operation profitable but were restrained by the Law of quotas that protected the interests of Renault. It was a shame. "

Portaro prototype that was never sold!

Salut Dragospetres

I always admired your curiosity.
The photo you saw is the last Portaro prototype, and was published in the magazine “Turbo” in 1984.

Although the mechanical remain unchanged, with a Daihatsu Diesel 2.5 engine, there are profound changes in the body, with more straight lines, and in the fittings: They keep the rims of the 260 Turbo Diesel, but the front panel was modified, as well as mirrors and seats.

This version is very similar to the military model, whose picture I have already published.

This prototype is unique and is registered.

If you look closely at the photo, you will see that the symbol, identical to my avatar, remains on the boot!!!... ::)

There is only this prototype that belongs to Mr. Hipolito Pires, who was the owner of the factory Portaro.
